Technological Educational Institute of Ionian Islands:

A creative effort underway

The President of the TEI of Ionian Islands, Professor Napoleon Maravegias and the Vice-Presidents Sotirios Soulis and Ioannis Dragonas, gave a press conference in order to present the actions of the Act "The Technological Educational Institute of Ionian Islands as an International Pole of Education and Innovation".

"In conditions of economic crisis and dissolution of the social system, the successful claim and implementation of such an ambitious and innovative action allowed us to realize our plans for a potent higher education institute in the Ionian Islands with emphasis on receptiveness and internationalization", stressed Mr. Maravegias.

"Among the objectives of this action are the collaborations with Greek and foreign Universities, supportive research and particularly the link of our Departments with the local communities", continued. "Thanks to the tools available by our program, we are trying with all our efforts to turn the disadvantage of the Ionian Islands’ dispersion into an advantage regarding the exploitation of the cultural and environmental wealth of Ionian Islands."

The actions of the program are divided into specific areas: electronic interface, science curricula, summer courses, diffusion to the local community, digital school.

In his presentation, Mr. Maravegias gave specific examples of successful actions. "The ten summer schools, organized in two short years, brought together 275 scientists and professionals from all over Greece and were the reason for the collaboration with 30 educational and research institutions of our country and abroad".

The actions for the local economy include highlighting the special characteristics of the islands (such as the promotion of local products in the domestic and international market and the standardization and identification of the local wines), the emergence of the environmental heritage of the islands (eg recording the natural heritage of the Ionian Islands in electronic database) and enhance the cultural wealth of the islands (eg nine single digital files to save the musical wealth of Ionian Islands and the dissemination of the traditional food of the Ionian islands).

"Besides, my term of office as Minister of Rural Development has taught me that the emergence of nutritional wealth of our country in the domestic and international markets must be linked with the culture of each place," commented.

Then the President of the TEI, referring to the organization's electronic infrastructure to support distance-learning process and management and implementation of the Digital School, noted that "new technologies are the key to our efforts."

As a sample of the digital culture that dominates the TEI of Ionian Islands, the event presented a video with digital three-dimensional reconstruction of the house of the great painter Constantinos Parthenis in Pessada of Cephalonia.

On this same occasion, Mr. Maravegias presented the report of the action of TEI during the academic years 2010-11 and 2011-12, saying: "In conditions of crisis, the NSRF (National Strategic Reference Framework) programs can only act as a locomotive for the development. At TEI of Ionian Islands we do everything possible for the best combination of the programs managed by local communities with the Greeks abroad".

He also stressed that his priority is "the creation of networks: networks of friends support collaborative networks with productive, professional and cultural organizations, anything can help to strengthen the bonds of community and educational place and society, according to the most modern methods of communication".
